Tips on overcoming the taste

What is it used for?

Are there any dangers?

="article_text">
It is my pleasure to educate you on the many health benefits surrounding Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV). This is one of those remedies that is absolutely outstanding. It packs such a considerable punch (bitter if you ask me, wink) with it's long list of uses. From an aid to weigh loss, to relieving the most intense hear burn, this truly is a "cure all".

In all the the medical break troughs we have had here in America, I don't understand why we are leaving behind age old remedies like ACV. There are many good herbs, plants, and ingredients that we leave out because a "pill" that is fresh to the market cures what ales you. Now I don't know about you, but I feel more comfortable with things that have been around for centuries(5,000 years to be accurate), extinct before any pharmaceutical companies existed. These things, I believe should be the foundation of our medicine chest. I am not opposed to taking medicine when medically necessary, but I judge some of us innocently enough, reach for a prescription before we reach for and old fashioned remedy.

I have read many testimonials on the determined health effects of ACV. Remember these testimonials have nothing to do with one brand or another, but they all have one thing in common. The ACV used is not the typical translucent orange ACV on your grocery store shelf. It's organic, raw unfiltered ACV. Which means it is not pasteurized and has "the mother"(a cloudy mass) settling on the top and bottom oft he bottle.

Okay, so what does ACV do, and how do I take it?

Apple Cider Vinegar has a lot of health benefits. I will go into many of them in the coming paragraphs. To answer how you take it, well thats really up to you. But here is the basic step, the tonic so to say: 2 tablespoons of ACV in 8 oz of water 3x a day. Add honey to taste. But in my experience the honey doesn't mix as well, and its bitter. Many people find ways to get over the bitter taste by experimenting. I, for example, assign it into a shot glass, and chug it down with a tall 16 oz glass of water right behind it. My 3 year old son however is quit fond of the taste, he calls it "this kind of water" as he points to the cabinet in which I store it. I place about 1/4 teaspoon in an 8 oz sippy cup with an ice cube, he loves it! I have also read many interesting ways to take it on a very challenging website (http://www.earthclinic.com/)

Heres what some of their readers found to work:
www.earthclinic.com Amy from Hartford, CT writes "I was on prescribed allergy medicine for 17 years. I started the honey and ACV mixed with water 3 years ago and rarely even have to take an over the counter allergy pill. It takes about 4-6 days of taking it twice a day to build up in my system, and then I usually only have to take it once a day. I'm a massage therapist and I recommend it to all of my clients who arrive in with allergies, many of them have become faithful to the ACV too. So glad someone told me about it!!

Blood Pressure - Lowering it that is. The potassium in apple cider vinegar is said to be beneficial to both the heart and blood pressure, and in some quarters this remedy is said to assist in making the blood thinner, and thereby assisting with blood pressure and in the prevention of a stroke.

John from Caledon, Ontario suggests, "Apple cider vinegar is easiest to palate when mixed with apple juice. It tastes like apple cider, plus you get the numerous antioxidant and natural benefits from the apple juice."

Lara from Milwaukee, Wisconsin writes, "I took Apple Cider Vinegar with a shot glass of Welches Grape Juice. It tastes a lot like wine to me this way. Much easier to take this device. I have a lot more energy already and I have only been taking it a few days."

Shawn from Boulder writes, "Mixed with ginger ale and white grape juice, ACV tastes terrific. Very similar in taste to Kombouchu tea."

Lisa from West Plains, MO writes, "I like the benefits I'm having since I've started taking acv. But I did not like the taste and surely I'm not alone. I tried it with mango tea and one spoonful of the vinegar and an equal amount of honey. It tastes extraordinary. I drink it at least four times a day. It's that good. Lipton tea has mango and I'm sure other brands will work. Now, go have yourself a cup 'o tea."
In summer months: Add 1/4 cup of ACV to a quart of water. Then add ice cubes. Drink this on a hot summer day, especially before working out. Your body will feel very cleansed.

You peruse, you have to play around with it to see what works for you. I know I tried drinking it mixed with water, I drank it from a straw and held my nose, but then found taking a "shot" was much easier.

Okay now for the good stuff, the cures! Get ready to be amazed.

Acid Reflux - This one I can personally attest to, as with my second pregnancy I got such bad acid that I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping and coughing. I would run to the kitchen and quickly take a shot of ACV followed by a lot of water, within moments I was attend in bed sleeping like a baby (until the water made me have to go to the bathroom, that is).

Allergies - It's sound weird that ACV can be taken in place of the clartin, nasal sprays, and other allergy medicine we take, but believe it! Again referring support to the website

Colds - It has been found that the pH factor (the acidity factor) of the body becomes a bit more alkaline prior to a wintry or flu striking you down. When you select apple cider vinegar it helps to re-balance the acid level of your body.

Another remedy for colds and flu, and said to be specifically suited for chest complaints during the winter, is to soak a fraction of brown paper with apple cider vinegar, and to place pepper on the one side of the paper. You then tie the paper, pepper side down, on to your chest and leave on for 25 - 30 minutes.

Apple cider vinegar is know to help with gout, arthritis and the prevention of migraines when taken on a regular basis. that is taking it at least once a day.

In addition ACV is also said to scare off food poisoning, yeast and fungal infections(when used as a douche, or taken orally). However please note that some ACV may be so strong it may actually cause a yeast infection, so be careful and start slow. When douching use 4 tablespoons to 1 quart of water.

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the nigh with those abominable charlie horses muscle spasms in the back of your legs? Well ACV can help prevent them if you take it daily. Again, this is something I can truly say works, because in my pregnancy, I would shoot out of bed screaming and grabbing my leg to try to stop the spasm, and it would only happen on the nights when I had not taken any ACV. Its not a coincidence, and even if it were, you have a ton more reasons to take it, correct!

As you can see, if you can overcome the bitter taste, it is well worth the investment in health you will reap from it's benefits. It's a natural detoxifier and will help keep your immune system is good health. it's also packed with B-vitamins and will give you loads of energy, healthy shiny hair, and a glowing complexion, seriously! It helps bring a rose glow to your face, which is helpful for all us pale faces out there.

One word of caution however, ACV has been notes to tooth enamel problems because of it's acidity. It is important that you drink plenty of water after your usual dosage, to take some of the acid out of your mouth, and do not "play" with the water in your mouth by swooshing it around. I have not had any problems yet, and have been taking it for 2 years now, but to be on the expedient side, please be careful. Some have found that if they drink the tonic itself, that it is best to drink it from a straw to reduce the contact on the teeth.

In the end it's way to beneficial to be forgotten, and I recommend this to everyone!. It has helped me in many ways and I hope it does the same for you.

Gout causes intense pain

There are remedies for the pain

Quality of life can be improved with treatment

="article_text">
Whenever there is talk of Arthritis, the association with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis is most often drawn. However one of the oldest forms of Arthritis is still around and detached as painful. Gout or gouty arthritis has been described since Hippocrates in the 5th century B.C. At one time the term Gout had the distinction of being used to describe all types of Arthritis. The association between gout and uric acid was known since the 19th century. However it wasn’t until scientists were able to understand the biochemistry of the uric acid production by the body in the 1960’s, that effective therapy for gout was discovered. Today Gout remains one of the most treatable forms of Arthritis.

Gout is one of the most painful rheumatic diseases. It comes in the form of acute arthritis that causes sudden and recurring attacks of severe pain and swelling in the joints. The most commonly affected joint is the big toe, even though other joints on the foot, leg, arms and hands can be affected. This is the results of deposits of needle-like crystals of uric acid in connective tissue, in the joint space between the two bones or in both. Gout is often characterized as an overload of uric acid in the body and recurring attacks of joint inflammation. The uric acid deposits can lead to inflammatory arthritis, which causes swelling, redness, heat, pain and stiffness in joints.

Uric acid is a waste product that results from the breakdown of purines, which are part of the human tissue and found in some foods. Normally uric acid is dissolved in the blood and passed through the kidneys into the urine, where it is eliminated. But, sometimes the kidneys can’t eliminate enough of the uric acid, either because the body increases its production of uric acid or the kidneys are not eliminating enough uric acid from the body. That’s when the levels of uric acid builds up in the blood, creating a condition called Hyperuricemia. This condition can also happen when a person eats too much high- purine foods, such as anchovies, sardines or scallops. By itself this condition is not a disease and is not dangerous. However high levels of uric acid in the blood cause crystals, which are called urate crystals, to form and gout can create. Redness, pain and swelling occur when white blood cells surround and attack the urate crystals. Deposits of uric acid called tophi can also appear as lumps under the skin at the rim of the ear. In addition, urate crystals can collect in the kidney and cause kidney stones.

Gout affects the great toe of about 75 percent of its patients. It can also affect the instep, ankles, heels, wrists, fingers and elbows. Gout progresses through four stages, Asymptomatic, Acute Gout, Intercritical Gout and Chronic Tophaceous Gout.

The Asymptomatic hyperuricemia stage is where the person has elevated levels of uric acid in the blood but no other symptoms. This stage does not require treatment.

Acute Gout happens when the uric acid crystals are deposited in the joints. This leads to intense pain and swelling in the joints. However they are a number of risk factors related to the development of hyperuricemia and gout that one should be aware of:

• Gender and age are related to the risk of developing gout. It is more common in men than in women and more common in adults than in children.

• Genetics can play a role in determining a person’s risk, as eighteen percent of people with gout have a family history of the disease.

• People who are overweight increases the risk of developing hyperuricemia and gout as the body produces more uric acid due to the availability of more tissue.

• The consumption of excessive amount of alcohol interferes with the removal of uric acid from the body.

• Food rich in purines can cause or aggravate gout in some people.

• Exposure to lead in the environment can also cause gout.

• Also clear diseases, such as blood cancers and some types of kidney disease, cause uric acid to build up.

At this moment there is no cure for gout, but active research is ongoing in a variety of fields related to gout. Recent medication to increase the elimination of uric acid in urine, and lowering the acid level in the blood are being tested. Research scientists are also working to develop less toxic and more effective medication to battle this disease.

This attack often happens in the night and can be triggered by stressful events, alcohol or drugs. Within three to ten days this attack can stop even without treatment. The next attack may not occur for months or even years. However with each passing year the attacks can happen more frequently or last longer.

Intercritical Gout is the period between acute attacks

Chronic Tophaceous Gout is the most debilitating stage of gout. Gout is a painful condition caused by excessive uric acid in the bloodstream. When these crystals solidify, they fetch in the areas around joints and result in a painful design of arthritis. Over time, gout can become problematic or even disabling, especially if left untreated. However, a combination of medications, dietary adjustments and home remedies can make gout much more tolerable—or even eliminate gout hurt entirely.

Medication

Most commonly, gout is treated through the spend of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like naproxen, indomethacin and ketoprofen. Some NSAIDs, including ibuprofen and acetaminophen, are available over-the-counter, though a doctor can prescribe stronger doses. Aspirin should, however, be avoided, because it appears to effect gout pain worse.

For people who can not tolerate NSAIDs, doctors may prescribe colchicine, a natural compound that, although effective, can also be toxic. Rarely, a doctor may prescribe a steroid, for inflammation caused by gout. However, side effects from steroids are common and can be severe, so they are rarely prescribed except when all other medications are failing.

Home Remedies

Relief from gout can sometimes be obtained through everyday items found in pantries and bathroom cabinets. Baking soda, which has a high pH, can abet to counteract the acidity of uric acid, the causative factor in pain related to gout. By decreasing the acidity of the blood and enabling the body's fluids to effectively dissolve uric acid crystals, baking soda may nearly eliminate gout pain.

Other home remedies include over-the-counter pain relievers and creams. Benzocaine ointment, commonly sold as a home treatment for hemorrhoids, is a highly effective Topical steroids like hydrocortisone cream can also be useful, although hydrocortisone is more commonly administered to gout patients by injection.

Herbal Medicine

Tart cherry juice appears to be one of the most effective naturopathic treatments for eliminating the buildup of uric acid. It is available in health food stores as a fruit juice or fruit juice concentrate, and tart cherry extract can be found in the form of a capsule, tablet or powder. It is generally affordable and there are no known risks associated with taking it.

Additionally, celery extract, an herbal diuretic, can serve to flush uric acid out of the body (unlike most diuretics, which increase levels of the acid). It also seems to increase the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs. Though it is effective, celery seed should not be taken in therapeutic doses for extended periods of time, since it may stress the kidneys.

Dietary Considerations

A diet high in purines will drastically increase the prevalence and severity of gout attacks, but a low-purine diet can reduce, or even eliminate, symptoms of the disease. Animal products are the most common triggers of gout attacks. Shellfish and organ meats are the biggest culprits, followed by red meat and fish. Other high-protein foods, like soy products and beans, may also contribute to gout.

Foods high in fructose, like candies, sodas, jellies and desserts, can also contribute to gout symptoms. To a lesser degree, other sugars—like sucrose and glucose—are also known triggers for the development of uric acid crystals. Alcohol, especially beer and wine, are noted for bringing severe gout-related injure and swelling, and it is best avoided entirely by gout sufferers.

Alternative Remedies

Like many forms of afflict, discomfort from gout can be treated using heat therapy. Heating pads applied to the affected area can be useful in relieving gout pain, and they may attend to improve circulation to the area, providing long-term relief. Gout sufferers can also soak the affected area in warm water, as needed for pain. Herbal extracts and vital oils added to the water may help.

Although aromatherapy for gout pain has not been clinically tested, some fragrant oils are reputed to relieve pain by encouraging relaxation and improving circulation to all parts of the body. Acupuncture, chromotherapy and meditation are also useful for many painful disorders, and could provide relief for people suffering from gout.

Sources:

Whitehouse et al.

Supplements to lower cholesterol can be healthier and cheaper than prescriptions

Supplements, diet and exercise should be used as a healthy lifestyle package

="article_text">
If you decide to take a vitamin or herbal supplement to help lower your cholesterol levels, be sure to check with your doctor first as it may interact with other medications you take. A doctor will know if the supplement will benefit your particular cholesterol levels. Supplements won't prefer the region of healthy diet and exercise, and they won't neutralize your smoking habit or high paunchy diet. Take them as part of a lifestyle package of healthy living.

All of these supplements, except for prescription niacin, can be found in health food stores and in many supermarkets.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

Niacin is a form of Vitamin B3 which is found in foods such as meat, fish, milk, eggs, green vegetables, beans, and cereal grains, but the amount necessary to lower cholesterol is fairly impossible to get through food sources alone. The suggested amount is 2 - 3 grams per day, or 2,000 - 3,000 mg.

The National Cholesterol Education Program recommends niacin as one of the primary treatments for high cholesterol. Studies have shown that niacin lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and increases HDL cholesterol.

Although niacin is available as a dietary supplement, the American Heart Association cautions patients to only use the prescription form of niacin. It should be used under a doctor's supervision due to the side effects, of which there are many. The most well-liked of these is hot flashes or flushed skin.

Niacin can increase the effect of medication archaic to lower blood pressure or cause nausea, indigestion, gas, diarrhea, gout, or worsen peptic ulcers. It can also bring on gout, liver inflammation and high blood sugar.

Soluble fiber

Oat bran, barley, psyllium seeds, apples, citrus fruits, lentils and beans are particularly effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels. These bind with cholesterol and escort it out of the body, reducing its absorption in the intestines.

Barley has no reported side effects. Supplement your diet with 3 grams barley oil extract or 30 grams barley bran flour a day.

Oat bran (found in oatmeal and whole oats) may cause gas or bloating. Use up to 150 grams of whole-oat products a day as a soluble fiber supplement.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Fish oil supplements are the safest and most practical way to increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids. 2 to 4 grams each day may reduce triglycerides, which will have the effect of increasing HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Side effects may include a fishy aftertaste, poor breath, gas, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

If you are taking blood thinning medication, such as warfarin, be sure to check with your doctor as it may interact with the omega-3 fatty acids.

Garlic extract

About 900 mg/day of garlic extract is reported to be optimal for reducing total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

Side effects may include bad breath or body odor, heartburn, gas, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. If you are taking blood thinning medication, such as warfarin, be clear to check with your doctor as it may interact with high doses of garlic extract.

Flaxseed

Ground flaxseed is a whole grain that may lop total triglycerides, which has the effect of raising HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Flaxseed binds with cholesterol in the intestine and prevents it from being absorbed. It should be taken with plenty of water to prevent constipation.

The recommended daily amount is 40 or 50 grams. Stir it into cereal or yogurt, or add it to baked goods such as muffins or bread. Look for foods in your grocery store that have flaxseed added, such as baked goods and snack items like flaxseed tortilla chips.

Possible side effects of ground flaxseed are gas, bloating or diarrhea. If you are taking blood thinning medication, such as warfarin, be sure to check with your doctor as it may interact with high doses of ground flaxseed.

Sources:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cholesterol-lowering-supplements/CL00013
http://altmedicine.about.com/od/highcholesterol/a/highcholesterol.htm
http://www.all-about-lowering-cholesterol.com/how-to-lower-cholesterol-naturally.html
http://www.cspinet.org/nah/novnah.htm
http://www.webmd.com/cholesterol-management/guide/high_cholesterol_alternative-therapies

This medical condition is a form of arthritis that occurs when there is an excess of uric acid in the circulatory system of the body. It is painful causing swelling and stiffness in the joints.

This acid eventually crystallizes in the body, particularly in the area of the joints. The symptoms of the condition include pain and stiffness in the body, burning sensations, and inflammation in and around the joints of the body. In this short guide, you will be introduced to foods to avoid gout.

When it comes to determining foods to avoid gout, you must first understand what it is that causes certain foods to result in the onset of the condition. There are compounds that are chemical based located in several foods that are called "Purines". This is where a gout attack can start. By simply eating these foods can originate the body to produce the acid, overloading the body's natural filtering system - the kidneys.

Typically, these chemicals are successfully broken down in the blood. However, if an individual consumes foods on a consistent basis that occupy a high level of these substances, the uric acid in the body will dramatically increase. As a result of this increase of acid, gout may develop.

Foods to avoid gout include meat products that are considered to be organs. One example is liver. However, there are meat products that are not organs that should also be avoided. These meats include pork products and beef. Meats that are game such as deer and rabbit should also be avoided.

It is also important to avoid fish that contain a substantial amount of chemicals in them. Examples include sardines, mackerel, and even seafood like scallops. Gravy products also qualify as foods to avoid gout. In addition to this, products such as beverages that contain alcohol such as beer should be avoided.

If you make sure that you follow the regimen of foods to avoid for gout, you will likely successfully avoid the complications of acquiring this condition.

SOURCE: HealthDay reports.

At the beginning of the research, the study participants were men aged 40-75. None of the men had a history of gout. The study was conducted by United States and Canadian researchers. The results were published in the June 2007 issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism, an official journal of the American College of Rheumatology.

Study results show that the men who consumed six or more cups of coffee daily had a fifty-nine percent lower risk of developing gout than non coffee drinkers. Men who drank four to five cups of coffee a day had a 40 percent less chance of developing the joint disease.

Caffeine didn't seem to be the factor in protecting against gout. Decaffeinated coffee drinkers had less promising results than regular coffee drinkers. Also, drinking tea did not reduce the incidence of gout.

Other ingredients in coffee other than caffeine must be protective against gout. Coffee contains a potent antioxidant called phenol chlorogenic acid. Researchers occupy this may be the protective component of coffee in preventing gout, HealthDay reports.

The research results were independent of any other risk factors for gout. HealthDay reports that scientists say the results are the most relevant to men over 40 years old with no history of gout. Researchers went on to add that studies of other groups would be highly noble, especially females and people already diagnosed with gout.

Gout is a type of arthritis. Gout is caused by too great uric acid present in the body, particularly the joints. Uric acid is formed when the body breaks down purines. Normally uric acid is dissolved in the bloodstream and passed out through the urine. With gout, the excessive uric acid builds up forming sharp crystal objects. These crystals then collect in joints, causing swelling and pain.

Purines are present in food. Some foods have a much higher tell of purines than others. Seafood has some of the highest purine content, especially sardines, salmon, and herring. Liver is also high in purines.

A gout attack can be very painful. Sometimes a gout attack will launch suddenly, but an attack usually starts at nighttime. Most often the big toe will start hurting first. Affected joints get red, become swollen, painful, and sensitive to touch. The area may feel hot. A gout attack may last for days. If untreated, the gout attacks will become more frequent and last longer. More joints will become affected the longer the condition is left untreated.

If gout attacks continue for years, tophi produce. These are soft patches of tissue caused by uric acid crystals. Tophi are found on the fingers and toes, hands, and elbows. Gout can also cause kidney stones and kidney disease.

Certain medications can cause gout including niacin, low dose aspirin, some diuretics, and certain drugs for cancer.

Other increased risk factors for gout are drinking alcohol regularly, diets high in purines, being overweight, and having a high LDL cholesterol count. Men are also more likely to manufacture gout than women.

Current treatments for gout include medicines that prevent future gout attacks by removing the uric acid from the joints and by preventing uric acid from forming. They can also befriend reduce swelling.

Doctors also advise gout sufferers to lose weight, eat a grievous sodium and low-fat diet, avoid foods high in purines, drink lots of water, and avoid alcohol. And now, drink coffee may be added to the list.

"Large Jolts of Java Can Maintain Gout at Bay". HealthDay
Source URL: http://healthday.com/Article.asp? Women are more susceptible to the disease and are three times more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than men. Typically, rheumatoid arthritis develops in small joints, including hands, feet and wrists. Over a period of time, the damage and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis can advance to larger joints, such as elbows, shoulders and knees. Because it is an autoimmune disease, meaning the immune system is attacking the joints, rheumatoid arthritis can affect connective tissue and blood vessels and can cause inflammation throughout organs in the body, including the heart and lungs.

What causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by inflammatory changes in a thin membrane that lines joints, also called the synovium. The synovium not only provides a protective covering for joints, but also secretes a lubricating fluid that enables joints to travel freely. When the immune system attacks the synovium, the lining becomes inflamed and irritated, which causes swelling, aching pain and soreness in the affected joint tissue and may lead to cartilage and bone loss.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Risk Factors

Some factors that may increase your risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis include:

Age: Although rheumatoid arthritis can occur at any age, most people develop RA between the ages of 35 and 50.

Gender: Women are at higher risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis and represent three quarters of sufferers of the disease.

Genetics & Family History: There may be an increased risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis if a close family member has the disease.

Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include soreness, stiffness, achiness and loss of function in the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect your wrists, hands, feet, elbows, shoulders, neck, knees, hips and ankles. In addition, rheumatoid arthritis pain can occur in the same joint on both sides of the body. Usually, if one hand
is affected, the other hand also becomes affected.

Unlike osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis can also affect connective tissue and blood vessels throughout the entire body. Inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis can extend to vital organs, including the heart and lungs. Furthermore, inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis can lead to an increased risk of respiratory and infectious diseases.

Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis

The diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis is usually made by a physical examination, x-ray, joint aspiration procedure or blood test. It is important to find out whether or not you have rheumatoid arthritis, and, if diagnosed, what type of treatment is best for you. If swelling or stiffness occurs in your joints for more than two weeks, you should contact your doctor for a physical examination of affected joints.

Because most patients that suffer from rheumatoid arthritis have antibodies called rheumatoid factors in their bloodstream, your doctor may have you assume a blood test. However, an indication of rheumatoid factor in your blood does not necessarily mean that you have rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid factor is also found in cases of chronic infection and in some other types of autoimmune disease. Your doctor will most likely want to invent additional tests to confirm your diagnosis.

If your doctor suspects that you may have joint hurt, he or she may perform additional tests to assess the severity. X-rays of the affected joints reveal cartilage loss and bone injure. In addition, your doctor may conduct a joint aspiration method, which involves removing synovial fluid from the affected joints with a needle. This test also helps your doctor determine whether or not you have an infection in the affected joint area.

Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Although there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, early diagnosis and self-management can significantly cleave arthritis pain and symptoms. Once you are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, your doctor will recommend medications to relieve pain and inflammation.

Your doctor may also give you disease-modifying medications to slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Because this type of medication is strong, you will need to be closely monitored by your doctor while you are taking it. Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis also includes rest, employ, physical or occupational therapy and exhaust of splints.

Lumber Spinal Stenosis usually affects patients over 60 years feeble.

Diagnosis of Lumber Spinal Stenosis is best consulted by an MRI.

Gouty arthritis is identified by urate crystals in joint fluid.

="article_text">
Arthritis is a very painful problem that affects a titanic percent of the earth’s population. But what do we actually know about arthritis disorders that we will probably end up with at some point in our lives? I hope this article helps provide some important data about this painful condition.

Life with Arthritis: Joints
Arthritis usually centers around the joints in your bones. It makes bending and any movements subtle and extreme, highly painful. Two areas are helpful in the diagnosis…joint pattern and the presence or absence of extra articular manifestations.

Your doctor will need to answer three specific questions in order to determine the actual diagnosis.
• Is there inflammation in the joints?
• Out of all the joints of the body how many are actually involved?
• What specific joints are affected?

If inflammation is exhibit the chances are that the diagnosis will come back rheumatoid arthritis-systemic lupus-gout. If inflammation is absent chances are you have Osteoarthritis.

If the number of joints involved are monarticular the diagnosis will most likely be gout-trauma, septic arthritis or lyme disease. However, if two through four joints are involved (oligoarticular) then this means one of the following is present: rewriter disease, psoriatic arthritis, or inflammatory bowel disease. If more than five joints are affected (polyarticular) means that rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus is most likely present.

The actual joint involvement of the distal interphalangeal would lead to the conclusion of osteoarthritis and symptomatic arthritis but not necessarily rheumatoid arthritis. Metacarpophalangeal, meaning your wrists, would suggest rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus but not Osteoarthritis. If the first metatarsalphalangeal is alive to this would expose a diagnosis of gout and Osteoarthritis.

Life with Arthritis: Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis has got to be the most common of all joint disease.s around 90% of all people have some sort of symptoms for this by the time they reach 40 years of age. Age, run, and geographic area, plays no piece in elements facilitating this disease.

Degenerative Joint Disease is classified into two types:
• PRIMARY- Which commonly effects the terminal interphalangeal joints and less commonly the proximal interphalangeal joints, the medacarpophalangio, carpomedacarpel joints including the thumb, hip, knee, big toe, cervical and the lumbar spine.
• SECONDARY- this can occur in any joint resulting from rheumatoid arthritis and intra/extra-articular causes.

The onset of arthritis disorder usually occurs with stiffness rarely lasting more than 15 minutes. The arthritis will originate later on into wound and will worsen with activity or weight bearing.

Prevention is key when dealing with joints. For instance, weight reduction reduces the risk of developing new osteoarthritis, while maintaining normal /stable vitamin D levels will help reduce progression of osteoarthritis and may stop it from even occurring.

Life with Arthritis: Gouty Arthritis
Gouty arthritis is usually acute and quite painful. First let’s try to understand gout a little better. It is a metabolic disease and is associated with fluctuation in abnormal amounts of urates within the body and usually as reoccurring acute arthritis and is defined later on by its chronic deforming tendencies. Pacific islanders such as Filipinos and Samoans have the most risk to this certain disorder.

Approximately 90% of all patients with primary gout are men over 30. But in women, it can perform after menopause. The urate crystals are found in cartilage and have been linked to the tissues and fluid during acute arthritis.

Most acute arthritis has a sudden onset during time of sleep. Beer consumption can facilitate a gout attack. While toes, feet and knees are commonly affected, hips and shoulders are rarely affected.

It is important to spy a doctor for the diagnosis for the type or types of arthritis you may have as acute gout is often mistaken for cellulitis and chronic tophaceous arthritis may resemble chronic rheumatoid arthritis. So you see, it is absolutely imperative that you see your healthcare professional before making any assumptions as the detestable medicine based on your own educated guess may leave you with more serious health problems down the road.

Life with Arthritis: Conclusion
Since arthritis of all types seems to affect most of us at one point or another, not to mention it affects people in our families, making sure that you are educated on this common disease is mandatory for helping others cope with arthritis and the pain it brings with it. I hope this has helped you better understand this condition and might inspire you to ogle your doctor regularly and sustain up healthy nutrition habits.

Insulin, a hormone secreted by beta cells located in the pancreas, presents glucose to fat cells, especially white abdominal fat cells, skeletal muscle cells and liver cells for absorption. Insulin resistance is a plot in which the receptor tissues have impaired uptake of glucose in the presence of insulin. Factors contributing to this state of insulin resistance include:

• a family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus

• CVD

• central obesity ("apple" endomorphic body build)

• increased intra-abdominal fat

• low levels of physical activity

• hypertension

• blood lipid abnormalities

• a systemic inflammatory state1

Definitions/Etymology:

Metabolic = resulting from metabolism < the chemical and physical processes of living organisms, such as anabolism (anabolic steroids—expanding muscle mass (e.g., testosterone)), and catabolism (catabolic steroids—reducing muscle mass (e.g. prednisone)).

Syndrome = any site of characteristics regarded as identifying a certain condition.2

Syndromes serve as superb diagnostic tools. Metabolic syndrome identifies several cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors:

• abdominal obesity

• dyslipidemia (high triglycerides, low HDL-C)

• high blood pressure (HTN)

• glucose intolerance

• systemic inflammation .

History/Nomenclature of the Metabolic Syndrome

J. Vague first identified a relationship between abdominal adiposity, diabetes, and CVD in 1947.
In 1967, G. Crepaldi identified insulin resistance in obese patients with dyslipidemia. In 1987, Ferrannini called HTN an insulin resistance state. G. Reaven fabricated "Syndrome X" in 1988. Kaplan described it as the "deadly quartet" in 1989. E. Ferrannini and Haffner identified the "insulin resistance syndrome" in 1991-1992. "Metabolic Syndrome," coined in 1998 by the World Health Organization, remains popular.3

Many descriptions of the metabolic syndrome exist. Listed below is a diagnostic panel from the
National Cholesterol Education Program - Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) (2001)4:

Three or more of these five findings must be present to diagnose the metabolic syndrome:

• Abdominal obesity(waist circumference for men > 40 inches, for women > 35 inches)

• Plasma triglycerides ≥ 150 mg/dl

• HDL-cholesterol < 40 mg/dl (men) or < 50 mg/dl (women)

• Blood pressure ≥ 130/80 mmHg

• Fasting blood glucose ≥ 100 mg/dl

Panels created by other research groups list "insulin resistance" (inappropriately high insulin levels in the blood), "prothrombotic state" (high blood levels of molecules which promote blood clotting at high levels), and/or "proinflammatory state" reflected by a high blood level "cardiac or high-sensitivity" CRP (C-Reactive Protein, a maker of inflammation in the circulation).

Abdominal girth ismeasured at the "waist:" Facing the subject, the tops of the iliac bones (iliac crests) are located and a tape measure is wrapped around the belly objective atop the iliac crests. Measured in inches and/or centimeters, high waist circumference is the sine qua non of metabolic syndrome.

In that regard, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in April, 2005 made central obesity plus two metabolic consequences (lipid abnormality, glucose intolerance or elevated fasting glucose) its definition of the metabolic syndrome.

Measurement of waist circumference varies with demographics: due to variations in abdominal fat distribution, the upper limit of normal for abdominal girth for European men is 94 cm and 80 cm for European women, while for Asian men it's 90 cm, women 80 cm (South Asian and Chinese people); US men 102 cm, US women 89 cm.

Insulin, a hormone secreted by beta cells located in the pancreas, presents glucose to fat cells, especially white abdominal fat cells, skeletal muscle cells and liver cells for absorption. Insulin resistance is a residence in which the receptor tissues have impaired uptake of glucose in the presence of insulin.

Metabolic Digression

In the 1950's and 1960's, "metabolism" referred to a person's ability to "burn" fuel (food, fat, sugar, bread, lean meat), while "hula hooping" was believed to burn fat, especially around the midriff.

A person who was obese was said to have a "slow metabolism." Those who were deemed "skinny" were said to have a high or "fast" metabolism.

The "master gland" in control of a person's metabolism was the thyroid, an endocrine organ located in the neck, secreting thyroid hormone.

Thyroid hormone entered every cell of the body and up-regulated each cell's "furnaces" (mitochondria): too much hormone caused excessive burning of calories, too little cooled and slowed the rate of burn.

Hypothyroidism (too dinky thyroid hormone secretion) equaled wearisome metabolism, with associated weight gain and sluggishness. Excessive secretion of the hormone caused hyperthyroidism >>> weight loss and tremor.

Decades ago, diagnosing hypothyroidism involved placing the patient in a respirator tank, like a bod pod, where BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) measured. A improper BMR indicated hypothyroidism.

Today, hypothyroidism is frequently associated with persistent weight gain, observed as a rising BMI (Body Mass Index), though an elevated BMI may coincide with normal thyroid function. Hypothyroidism is diagnosed definitively in novel times by a supersensitive TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) assay. Hyperthyroidism has a vulgar TSH, and is a catabolic fat-burning condition.

BMI Determination and Application

• BMI = [wt. in lbs./(ht. in inches)2] x 703.1 = BMI in kg/m2

• Overweight: 25 < BMI < 30 kg/m2

• Obese: BMI > 30 kg/m2

Hypothyroidism is associated with construct up of white fat, often centrally, which is seen metabolic syndrome. To the extent that gross secretion of thyroid hormone slows the metabolic rate, fat cells expand with increased calorie storage, and the insulin receptors on the adipose cell surfaces become "diluted," making insulin less effective, a condition called insulin resistance.

A condition has been discovered, in which subclinical hypothyroidism is found to be associated with the metabolic syndrome, causing insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, and hypertriglyceridemia.6

Persons afflicted with gout, another metabolic condition, frequently manifest the metabolic syndrome. High rates of coronary artery disease seen in gout patients may be related to metabolic concordance.

Other metabolic diseases and conditions associated with metabolic syndrome include PCOS (PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome—treated with the insulin sensitizer Metformin); physical inactivity; aging; genetic susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease.

In review, be it genetics, lifestyle, hypothyroidism, or prescription drug adverse effects: over the years, fat stores expand, beta cells stress out, blood lipids and sugars become erratic, beta cells weaken and die off, coronary and other arteries clog, and Type 2 diabetes develops.

Clinical Digression

You are now a fictitious individual with insulin resistance. You competitively raced in many triathlons, with a 3-point body full measurement of 3% at age 25. You discover in a mirror what 20 years of high carb, high protein diets, oenophilia and pipe smoking has done to your abdominal girth.

The mirror was not enough—you went straight for only a month. You maintain the same nutritional intake or worse over the next 5 years, and much of your starch potato achieve comes from the couch. Your BMI has gone up, abdominal, metabolically active fat stores have increased.

The beta cells of your pancreas have been dying off over this span of time—now down to 40% of their original number. A random blood chemistry analysis done for a life insurance policy shows a blood glucose of 142 mg/dL. You call your fictitious primary provider.

The provider orders a fasting blood glucose and a blood glucose 2 hours after a glucose load (75 gm glucose, orange flavored), and other tests, including a fasting lipid profile. With a follow up complete physical exam.

Your fasting glucose is 118 mg/dL (normal < 110 mg/dL, diabetes 126 mg/dL) and 2 hr post prandial is 165 mg/dL (normal < 140 mg/dL, diabetes > 200 mg/dL).

Fasting Total Cholesterol (TC) is 205 mg/dL (normal
LDL ("unpleasant") cholesterol is 115 mg/dL (goal < 70 mg/dL)

The HDL-C is 30 mg/dL (goal > 40 mg/dL for a male, > 50 mg/dL for a female)

Triglycerides are 300 mg/dL (goal < 150 mg/dL).

The cardioCRP is 6.8.

A trace of protein is found in the urine. Your serum creatinine is 1.6 mg/dL. Your calculated creatinine clearance is 78mL/min (goal >60mL/min)

The provider (PCP) completes the physical exam.

Your height is found to be 69 inches, the weight 220 lbs. and the BMI 32.5 kg/m2.

Your blood pressure is 186/102 mmHg.

Your abdominal girth is 50 in.

The remainder of the exam is normal except for xanthelasma found on your eyelids (associated with cholesterol buildup).

A treadmill exercise test is ordered and scheduled for 3 days.

The PCP tells you that you have Metabolic Syndrome and that your risk for diabetes, heart attack, and stroke is increased.

"As of this time," the PCP states, "you have what is known as prediabetes, meaning that when you eat a meal, not enough insulin is released to meet your body's needs, so your blood sugar rises above 140 mg/dL but not high enough to develop a diagnosis of diabetes."

"Also, the fasting glucose is over 100 mg/dL, which indicates prediabetes, but is not in the diabetic range."

The Hemoglobin A1C, run in the office that day, was 6.5%, and the PCP said it reflected your fasting prediabetic sugar level. "It should be brought down below 5.9%," said the PCP, "using the interventions outlined above."

You are advised to see a nutritionist for instruction in a weight control, lipid-lowering, ADA diet.

The PCP instructs you to eat less meat and fat and refined grains (products made from flour).

You are instructed eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grain products, and dairy—"These foods are associated with clearing of the metabolic syndrome as well as prevention."8

You are advised to quit smoking and quit drinking, to take up regular walking, with a goal of up to 2 miles/30 min., 5 times weekly.

You are to weigh yourself fasting, and with an empty bladder, each A.M., record it, and lose 1-2 lbs. per week.

You are to start home blood pressure monitoring—record these readings as well.

Reduce salt/sodium intake and start the prescriptions given to you for lipid-lowering and blood pressure control medication.

"You have protein—a microscopic amount—in your urine. Your kidneys are clearing the blood at this time at an acceptable rate—we will need to get a urine microalbumin on you today" states the PCP. "CKD—Chronic Kidney Disease—is a complication of your condition, particularly in view of your high level of CRP, which is associated with 3.6 x the risk of CKD."9

The PCP warns you that your beta cells are not far from exhaustion, at which time you will not make enough insulin, your blood sugar will rise, and you will have full-blown diabetes mellitus, Type 2 (risk of developing type 2 diabetes 5- to 9-fold9).

"Remember, you must make the changes I've outlined for you.

Gout is treatable and there are ways of preventing Gout from recurring.

="article_text">
Gout is a execute of arthritis. People with Gout experience sudden severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. Usually the joint at the base of the mammoth toe is affected.

Gout causes intense pain

There are remedies for the pain

Quality of life can be improved with treatment

="article_text">
Whenever there is talk of Arthritis, the association with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis is most often drawn. However one of the oldest forms of Arthritis is still around and unruffled as painful.

The most commonly affected joint is the ample toe, even though other joints on the foot, leg, arms and hands can be affected. This is the results of deposits of needle-like crystals of uric acid in connective tissue, in the joint space between the two bones or in both. Gout is often characterized as an overload of uric acid in the body and recurring attacks of joint inflammation. The uric acid deposits can lead to inflammatory arthritis, which causes swelling, redness, heat, hurt and stiffness in joints.

Uric acid is a waste product that results from the breakdown of purines, which are allotment of the human tissue and found in some foods. By itself this condition is not a disease and is not unsafe. However high levels of uric acid in the blood cause crystals, which are called urate crystals, to produce and gout can develop. Redness, pain and swelling occur when white blood cells surround and attack the urate crystals. Deposits of uric acid called tophi can also appear as lumps under the skin at the rim of the ear. In addition, urate crystals can collect in the kidney and cause kidney stones.

Gout affects the big toe of about 75 percent of its patients.

This stage usually develops over a period of ten years or more. At this stage, there is permanent damage to the affected joints, due to cartilage and bone destruction, which sometimes can lead to deformity.

Those who suffer from gout must be careful as Pseudogout and bacterial cellulites can sometimes mimic Gout.
Pseudogout produces similar symptoms of inflammation. It affects the knees, wrists, ankles, shoulders and hips. The affected areas are characterized by acute joint swelling, warmth, stiffness and pain. However the deposits are made up of calcium phosphate crystals not uric acid, and as such treated differently.

Bacterial Cellulite is an inflammation of the connective tissue underlying the skin. It produces symptoms like swelling redness, warmth, and pain. Affecting areas like the arms, leg and face. This condition can last from days to weeks and is treated differently.

Treatment of gout can be seen as non-medicated and medicated.
The non-medicated aspects of treating gout are the reducing of alcohol consumption and dietary changes. This includes scaling back on foods rich in purine, i.e. sardines, scallops and shellfish among others, which helps to reduce the uric acid levels in the blood.
Weight reduction can also be helpful, if this can be done by reducing dietary fat and calorie intake, combined with a regular aerobic employ program. The weight reduction helps to lower the risks of reoccurring attacks of gout.

The medicated aspects start with the use of pain relievers to control pain. Acetaminophen / Tylenol or more potent analgesics are outmoded to manage pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen sodium or indomethacin are used effectively in reducing joint inflammation.

Colchicine is also old-fashioned but not as frequently as NSAIDs, to treat gout. It has been stale since the 1800’s. When used it is very effective. However its side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, after a short time, makes it intolerable for some people.

Finally, there is medication that can be used to manage the metabolic derangement that causes hyperuricemia and gout. This form of treatment reduces the elevated levels of uric acid in the blood

The underlying cause of gout is still unknown. It is known though, that the build up of urate crystals and the depositing of these crystals in the space between the joints causes acute gout. If one should have to live with gout, life style changes can obtain it easier to live with this lifetime disease.

• Also certain diseases, such as blood cancers and some types of kidney disease, cause uric acid to develop up.

At this moment there is no cure for gout, but active research is ongoing in a variety of fields related to gout. New medication to increase the elimination of uric acid in urine, and lowering the acid level in the blood are being tested. Research scientists are also working to develop less toxic and more effective medication to battle this disease. It is important to remember that you should build close ties with your doctor and therapist, while becoming full partners in their treatment, which is, living well with Gout.

Gout is a painful condition caused by excessive uric acid in the bloodstream. When these crystals solidify, they bag in the areas around joints and result in a painful form of arthritis. Over time, gout can become problematic or even disabling, especially if left untreated. However, a combination of medications, dietary adjustments and home remedies can make gout much more tolerable—or even eliminate gout pain entirely.

Medication

Most commonly, gout is treated through the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like naproxen, indomethacin and ketoprofen. Some NSAIDs, including ibuprofen and acetaminophen, are available over-the-counter, though a doctor can prescribe stronger doses. Aspirin should, however, be avoided, because it appears to make gout pain worse.

For people who can not tolerate NSAIDs, doctors may prescribe colchicine, a natural compound that, although effective, can also be toxic. Rarely, a doctor may prescribe a steroid, for inflammation caused by gout. However, side effects from steroids are accepted and can be severe, so they are rarely prescribed except when all other medications are failing.

Home Remedies

Relief from gout can sometimes be obtained through everyday items found in pantries and bathroom cabinets. Baking soda, which has a high pH, can aid to counteract the acidity of uric acid, the causative factor in pain related to gout.

Additionally, celery extract, an herbal diuretic, can help to flush uric acid out of the body (unlike most diuretics, which increase levels of the acid). It also seems to increase the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs. Though it is effective, celery seed should not be taken in therapeutic doses for extended periods of time, since it may stress the kidneys.

Dietary Considerations

A diet high in purines will drastically increase the prevalence and severity of gout attacks, but a low-purine diet can cleave, or even eliminate, symptoms of the disease.

Alcohol, especially beer and wine, are notorious for bringing severe gout-related wound and swelling, and it is best avoided entirely by gout sufferers.

Alternative Remedies

Like many forms of pain, discomfort from gout can be treated using heat therapy. Heating pads applied to the affected area can be useful in relieving gout pain, and they may help to improve circulation to the area, providing long-term relief. Gout sufferers can also soak the affected state in warm water, as needed for hurt. Herbal extracts and significant oils added to the water may help.
